Cradles are typically bigger than bassinets and due to their large size they are also more stationary in nature. Most cradles are made from wood or other manufactured materials. There are many different types of cradles that serve different purposes. A baby cradle swing is provided with a mechanism that allows it to move from one side to another in order to help the baby fall asleep. As per the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, every year more than a thousand infants are brought into emergency rooms because of injuries they sustain in baby cradle swings. Most often the injury results from the baby's neck or head getting trapped between the suspension bars of the swing and the back rest. This is not a small figure and as a concerned parent it is your duty to pay attention to all safety details for the sake of your child. 

Even for an infant that is just about two months old it is necessary that the baby cradle swing has a wide and solid base that prevents any tripping. Also required is an adjustable seat for infants who are not yet able to sit by themselves. However, please make sure that the adjustment mechanism is reliable and that the seat does not flatten on its own in case the baby moves. This can cause the baby to slide out or fall backwards out of the baby cradle swing. 

The seat on the baby cradle swing must have a combination safety belt that covers the waist and crotch. Most new models should have such a combination. Stay away from the older models that have only a waist belt as it is unsafe and allows babies to slip down through. Some baby cradle swings will extra features that are actually good; like rolled towels on either side of the head for increased stability. 

If you choose to go for a battery operated baby cradle swing or one of the crank models, then make sure the operation is silent so that it does not startle or wake up the baby. When option for a battery operated baby cradle swing always choose one that offers variable speeds. Slower speeds are good for infants while an increased swing is required once the baby becomes active.

Never leave the child alone in the baby cradle swing or place the swing itself close to any dangerous object that the child may grasp.
