Basic Crib Safety

Crib safety is something that a family with a new baby must become familiar with. It is important to read up on this for the sake of your baby as well as your piece of mind while you and your baby sleep. So before you bring your beautiful child into this world, here are few tips that may make your life less stressful.

Basic Crib Safety

Once you have assembled the crib in which to place the baby, ensure that all of your connections are properly in place and there are no misplaced or broken pieces. If there are pieces that are left over after assembly, be sure to double and triple check that you have not failed to properly install the pieces.

Make sure you test the mattress out with your hand to ensure that there is nothing that has the potential to poke or irritate babies fragile skin. Check for tears or splits. Always check to see if your mattress is a snug and secure fit to the crib. An active baby that tends to roll around or move frequently may have a tendency to fall between the mattress and the side bar.

If you have a wooden crib or a crib that contains wood that baby can get to, routinely check these surfaces for splits. These types of surface may be prone to split of whelp and this could ultimately be very dangerous for your child.

Take a look at the vertical bars on your crib. It is good crib safety practice to make sure that these bars are not too far apart. An active baby may have a tendency to try to stick their heads through these bars and you don't want this to be able to happen. An infant could get stuck like this.

Never place your crib next to windows. As always you want to keep baby away from any drafts that the windows may be letting in unknowingly. But there is another concern that you may not have thought of. You want to keep baby away from any hanging blinds or blind strings. Your child may move around the crib and find themselves entangled in one of these blind strings.

Is Your Baby is Ready for a Regular Bed?

There are many answers out there for this question. If you own an adjustable crib, step one should be to lower the mattress to its lowest setting. Place your child in the crib in the standing position. If the child's head is more than a few inches taller than the side of the crib than you may want to consider putting him or her in a regular bed. At this height a child may begin to get curious of their surroundings and get the urge to climb. If your child is already climbing out of the crib, for his or her safety you definitely want to consider moving them to a regular bed. There may not be an exact science to this question but this may give you some ideas.

These are just a few crib safety practices that you may need to make your baby's crib just a little bit safer.
